• Speeding in the village – latest update

We had the shared SAM2 speed monitor in Claxton in September and October, and will retrieve it at the end of the year.  Unfortunately the device developed a small (hopefully minor) fault and reset its date to the 1970s!  We have just managed to extract the information it gathered which covers 36 days of September and October.  We are unable to identify which day is which but the data is still noteworthy.  The SAM was on the post outside the Village Hall, facing north towards Rockland in September, and south towards Loddon in October.  The data we have is shown in the table below.

What does it show?  That over 3 in 4 drivers drove through within the 30MPH speed limit, and that 96% were in or just over that limit.

Regrettably it also shows cars coming through at over 50MPH at 11.50am and at over 55MPH at 9.55am.  We are sorry we can’t identify the day of the week for either of these, but we will endeavour to check and correct the fault when the device comes back to us in about 6 weeks’ time.

  • Claxton Speedwatch needs you!

Would you like to become part of a team of volunteers contributing towards road safety for all road users in Claxton?

Our SAM2 data has shown a significant number of vehicles regularly travelling through the village at speeds above the legal limit.  To address this we are proposing to set up a Community Speed Watch (CSW) initiative, its aim being to reduce speed in areas of concern, make drivers aware that excessive speed is socially unacceptable, educate drivers about the dangers of speeding and address concerns from local residents about cars speeding through their neighbourhoods.

If you are interested in becoming part of the team or would like to find out more please email [email protected].

  • George Lane roundabout – upcoming road closures

We are given to understand that for 4 successive weekends the main A146 will be completely closed allowing for road marking, signage etc to be completed.  These closures will be from Friday evening at 8pm through to Monday morning at 5am on the following weekends:

    • 18-21 March
    • 25-28 March
    • 1-4 April
    • 8-11 April.

In each case the closure will run from the junction with Norwich Road (to the North) and the junction with High Bungay Road (to the South).

Traffic will most likely be diverted through Chedgrave and Loddon and there is likely to be major disruption throughout these periods.  Alternative routes include the B1332 through Poringland down to Bungay, but whichever way you look at it, roads are going to be very busy until Easter.

We further understand – though this has yet to be confirmed – that the road through Chedgrave and Loddon (Bridge Street then High Street and Beccles Road/High Bungay Road) is due to close for a period for urgent resurfacing.  Whether this work follows immediately after the A146 works or after a gap of some sort is also unknown at this time.  More news will be posted on this website when we have it.
