Speeding in the village – November 2021 update

The SAM2 has just completed its three months in Claxton, and it will be back here on 1 March 2022.  The location in November was the 30MPH repeater post at the Village Hall, facing north-west towards Rockland St Mary and Norwich.  We have downloaded the statistics for the month and these are shown below.

The overall number of vehicles passing the sign was a new record for a single month since the monitor was deployed in 2019.  The percentage staying within the legal speed limit was just below October’s figure, which was low, with almost 1 in every 4 vehicles passing in excess of the speed limit.  Giving a little bit of flexibility for those marginally over the limit still means around 1 in 22 was speeding.

During the month over 860 vehicles drove through at speeds above 35MPH, for which there is no excuse.  Although November didn’t see any lunatics going through between 61-65MPH as in October, two came through at between 51-55MPH at 8.19pm on Thursday 18 November and at 7.44pm on Monday 29 November.

We have been in touch with the police and await contact back from them, so that we can get an idea of the options available to us to respond to such behaviour.  This will be discussed at forthcoming Parish Council meetings, so if any villagers have particular issues we recommend you come along and make your views known.  The next Parish Council meeting is at the Village Hall on Wednesday 19 January starting at 7.30pm.
