  • Loddon History Group needs your help

The Loddon History Group has asked their members for help in identifying the location on the photographs (below).  They have been contacted by Richard Papworth.  His relative Ellen Beatrice Forder (later Papworth, known as Nellie) was born in Ashby St Mary in 1897.  By 1911 she is living in Chedgrave Street, her father was George and her mother Georgiana (various spellings) was nee Basey Fisher.

Richard seems to have been quite fond of Nellie who passed away in 1974.  In her belongings he found these photographs.  She is second on the left in the maids uniform in the group of people working at a large house hall/house but there is nothing in the background to tell us where it was, this is a very long shot!!  Does anyone recognise a relative or where it might be?  And we can’t identify the large house being used as a military hospital either but it was taken by a photographer with a studio in Norwich.  We have scoured Picture Norfolk, but if you have any other ideas do let me know.

  • Recent Road Traffic incidents

This is traditionally a time when heavy rainfall, coupled with mud and sand on the road and cooler temperatures can turn road surfaces into skating rinks, or at least make them greasier and more slippery than we have seen for a while.

This morning two vehicles collided on Chapel Road in Ashby St Mary, not far from the junction with Chapel Lane and near the fibre broadband roadside cabinet No6.  One of the vehicles was reportedly travelling far too fast on such a narrow road and could not stop in time.  No-one was hurt but the vehicle which was hit was rendered undriveable.  The other vehicle then drove off, to be seen later by a dog walker who narrowly escaped being hit.  No-one managed to get the registration number.  The vehicle is a silver grey Ford Mondeo and has damage to its radiator and front right (offside) headlight.

Just 2 days ago a vehicle crossed the humpback bridge at the Loddon end of the village travelling fast enough that when they collided with one of the telegraph poles on the left-hand side of the road, the impact ripped the fibre cable from its moorings all the way back into Claxton as far as The Warren.  Again, no-one was hurt but the car was badly damaged and the authorities were on the scene fairly fast.  Openreach are part way through relocating the fibre cable at the top of a number of telegraph poles.  Telephone services were interrupted but thankfully not for long.

Both incidents happened because drivers were not paying enough attention to the road and most likely because of excessive speed.  We have a large number of young families in the village these days, as well as a sizeable number of senior citizens who will not be as sprightly as they once were.  We don’t want to be reporting on serious injuries, let alone anything worse, so could we please ask everyone who uses our roads to

  • Macmillan Coffee Morning – didn’t we all do well?

Thank you to everyone who supported the Macmillan Coffee Morning on September 25th, whether by coming on the day or with donations of cakes, produce or cash.

It was good to see so many people despite the terrible weather and current restrictions.  As a result of the morning an amazing £361.70 was raised for Macmillan.

  • Rockland St Mary and District Gardening Club – update

Here is an update on the Gardening Club. Six members of the committee met on Tuesday evening to discuss the current situation in light of the new regulations introduced by the Government on Monday.

It was agreed to suspend all activities until the beginning of 2021. The committee (if restrictions permit at that time) will then meet again and discuss the best way forward. Penny Mills has agreed to provisionally book garden visits for next summer and most of the speakers for this year have agreed to transfer to next year.

People have obviously been very busy during lockdown judging by how their gardens are looking so good.

The committee sends its very best wishes to everyone. Keep safe and well and hoping to see everyone in the new year.
