Background

What is biodiversity?

Biodiversity is the variety of life on Earth – animals, plants, fungi and even microorganisms like bacteria that make up our natural world. They all work together in ecosystems to maintain balance and support all life. Biodiversity supports everything in nature that we need to survive – food, clean water, medicine and shelter.

What is the problem?

Populations of the UK’s most important wildlife have plummeted by an average of 60% since 1970, and we are now one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world.

What can we all do?

Under the 2021 Environment Act, it is now a statutory requirement that all parish and town councils must:

  • Consider what they can do to conserve and enhance biodiversity.
  • Agree policies and specific objectives based on their consideration.
  • Act to deliver their policies and achieve their objectives.

Claxton Parish Council has formed a Biodiversity Working Group to consider what action we can all take within the parish. We’ll be reporting our progress at each PC meeting and on the Claxton Parish website, but if you would like to know more, have any questions or suggestions, or would like to volunteer in any way then please do contact Sue ([email protected]), we would love to hear from you!
