• Affordable Transport for those seeking work

    Kickstart Norfolk, the moped hire charity, have received some funding from the EU to help them provide subsidised transport for anyone in Norfolk seeking employment but without the means to get to appointments.  Details can be read here.  The poster below also gives details.

  • New Local Lottery in aid of Village Hall

    Welcome to the Village Hall’s 200 Club, a local lottery which will deliver a monthly prize while also raising money for the Hall.

    How does it work?  There will be 12 monthly draws starting with April 2018.  One number from those chosen by participants will be drawn out at the following month’s Community Café.  The winner will receive a cheque equivalent to half of the numbers sold for that particular month.  So if 40 numbers had been sold, this would give very good odds of 40:1 and mean a winner’s cheque for £20.  If 60 numbers had been sold the prize would be £30, up to a maximum of £50.

    The lottery is open to anyone, whether they live in Claxton or Carleton St Peter or not.  There is no limit to the number of tickets which can be bought, but we ask that each ticket is bought for the year (or what remains of it).  £12 will get you a number for the whole of 2018-19 and you are free to chose any of the unallocated numbers between 1 and 200.

    Numbers are now on sale through Mike Balmer, and he will be at the Community Café on 13 February to answer any questions and sell numbers.  The draw for April will be on Tuesday 8 May.

  • South Norfolk Council Budget Consultation 2018-19

    South Norfolk Council is carrying out its annual consultation on setting its budget for 2018/19 and would welcome responses from residents and local businesses.

    This is your chance to make your views known but only if you complete the online survey which you can do by clicking here.  The survey took your Clerk less than 5 minutes to complete.

    Hard copies are also available from Accountancy Team, South Norfolk Council, Swan Lane, Long Stratton, NR15 2XE or by calling 01603 533855.

    The survey closes on 2nd February.

  • Greater Norwich Local Plan Regulation 18 Consultation 8/1/18 – 15/3/18

    You may be aware that public consultation on the emerging (Regulation 18) GNLP will start on 8th January, running to 15th March 2018.  Your views are being sought on a Growth Options document, which sets out:

    • the broad housing numbers required to 2036;
    • six main distribution options; and
    • a significant number of questions on various policy areas such as air quality, landscape and affordable housing

    It is very important to note that this is an early consultation stage – no final decisions have been made on any policy choice.  You can view the document online via www.gnlp.org.uk, and make your comments at the same time.  You don’t need to answer every question – you can simply comment on whichever parts of the plan interest you.

    The Site Proposals document is also published for consultation.  It lists sites submitted to us for consideration for various uses through the plan, along with a settlement summary for those parishes where sites have been submitted.  Again, no final decisions have been made on any site, and you can view the Site Proposals document and interactive maps online via www.gnlp.org.uk, making your comments at the same time.  You can comment on whichever sites interest you.  The Housing and Economic Land Availability Assessment (HELAA) in the evidence base has more detail on the sites submitted for potential inclusion in the GNLP.  Other evidence studies, along with the Interim Sustainability Appraisal are also available online for comment.

    About 25 roadshows at various locations in Greater Norwich have been planned to take place during the consultation period.  The precise venues and dates are published on www.gnlp.org.uk.  Officers will be available at the roadshows to discuss policy options or sites in general terms, but it is stressed that this is an early stage consultation exercise, and no decisions will be made until later in the plan-making process.  Parish councils have been invited to separate workshops.

    Hard copies of the maps and all other consultation documents are available from the consultation deposit points:

    • County Hall, Martineau Lane, Norwich (main reception);
    • City Hall, St Peters Street, Norwich (2nd floor reception);
    • Broadland District Council, Thorpe Road, Thorpe St Andrew (main reception);
    • South Norfolk Council, Cygnet Court, Long Stratton (main reception).

    The quickest and easiest way of responding to the consultation is online at www.gnlp.org.uk but if you can’t respond online, please contact us on 01603 306603 to get a response booklet.  All responses must be received by 5pm on 15th March 2018.

  • 2018 – what can we expect?

    We wish all our readers a very happy 2018.

    What can we expect in the new year?  Leaving aside the obvious high-level political stuff, and focussing on matters which affect the residents of Claxton, the following events are those we know about.  This list will be revised throughout the year in a Quarterly Forward Look.  Similarly if you have a village-wide event you would like publicised just let the Clerk know.

    We anticipate another photo competition this year and would encourage everyone to take pictures of the changing seasons this year, so that a wider range of photos can be assessed at the time.  And don’t forget about the 2019 calendar (see September entry  below).

    The Community Café celebrates its 2nd birthday on Tuesday 9 January.  Come along and help us record this milestone.

    The Parish Council meeting on 17 January will decide the level of funding we shall need for 2018-19, which is paid for through our Council Tax.

    We will be organising a village-wide litter-pick early in the year.  There is already a group of regular volunteers.  Let the Clerk know if you’d like to join in.

    The South Yare Wildlife Group has its AGM on 16 April in Claxton Village Hall, from 7pm.

    The Annual Parish Meeting – your meeting – takes place on Wednesday 16 May at 7.30pm in the Village Hall.

    At the end of May your current Parish Clerk steps down after 6 years in the job.  Look out for the vacancy notice.  This could be you.

    The 2018 Fair on the Yare takes place on Sunday 3 June from 12noon to 4pm.  Mark your diaries.

    We are hoping to stage another Open Day at Ducan’s Marsh in June.  More details in due course.

    The Annual Quiz Night will be on Saturday 16 June.  Another date for diaries.

    In September the Village Hall Committee expects to run another photo competition with the best entries forming a new calendar for 2019.

    Sometime in October we anticipate the first of 3 fibre-optic telecom cabinets will be installed in Claxton, giving the lucky few? access to high-speed broadband – at last.  The second cabinet should arrive by year’s end with the third coming some time in 2019.

    Later in the year, on Sunday 11 November, there will be an event at the Village Hall to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War.  More details nearer the time.

  • Macmillan Coffee Morning and Photo Competition

    Saturday’s coffee morning in support of Macmillan Cancer Support was very well attended.  Thanks to everyone who gave generously to this excellent cause.  A total of £700 was raised for this popular and worthy cause.  Below are a couple of photos from the occasion.

    In addition we ran our annual Photo competition with the theme “Our Villages”.  As in 2016 the standard was really high and it has again been decided to use the 13 best photos for a 2018 calendar.  Watch this space for details of when they go on sale.  They are bound to sell like hot cakes again so do not delay.

  • A Message from CPRE Norfolk about its Vision for Norfolk (V4N)

    CPRE Norfolk launched its vision for Norfolk in July – full details are at http://v4n.org.uk.  It calls for a common sense approach to protecting all the things that make Norfolk unique, as this will best serve the future of our county, all who live in it and the UK as a whole.

    Norfolk’s environment is a unique and precious asset.  It allows us to grow a substantial amount of the UK’s food, supports a major tourism industry and has an incredibly diverse range of flora and fauna.

    Today, Norfolk is facing many challenges including population growth, climate change and the ending of the partnership with the European Union.  At the same time, there are huge pressures to grow our economy and build more houses.  We must plan effectively, fully valuing our countryside and environment.

    CPRE Norfolk’s ‘Vision for Norfolk’ is a call for us all to join in the debate about how we manage these pressures, while protecting this precious and fragile environment. The land we have is a finite supply, and all of it serves a purpose. Once it is changed, it cannot be recovered.

    You can join the debate and help make a difference for the future, and the legacy we leave for future generations. Please read more about our V4N at http://v4n.org.uk/

    Many thanks,
