Speeding in the village – October 2021 update

The SAM2 has just completed another month back in Claxton.  We have it until the end of November.  The location in October was the 30MPH repeater post at the Village Hall, facing towards Langley and Loddon.  We have downloaded the statistics for the month and these are shown below.

The overall number of vehicles passing the sign was the highest since the monitor was deployed in 2019.  The percentage staying within the legal speed limit was well down on previous months, meaning almost 1 in every 4 vehicles passing exceeded the speed limit.  Giving a little bit of flexibility for those marginally over the limit still means around 1 in 20 was speeding.

During the month over 800 vehicles drove through at speeds above 35MPH, for which there is no excuse.  Even more worrying is the occasionally really high speed recorded.  For instance on Tuesday evening 19 October at 8.38pm one driver clocked a speed of between 61-65MPH, and three more recorded between 51-55MPH at 7.43pm on Friday 8 October, 4.18pm on Wednesday 13 October (school going home time!) and 3.43pm on Sunday 24 October.

We are following this up with the authorities to get an idea of the options available to us to respond to such behaviour and this will be discussed at forthcoming Parish Council meetings (though possibly not at the next one on 10 November).
