Speeding in the village – September 2021 update

The SAM2 has just completed its first month back in Claxton since May.  We have it until the end of November.  The location in September was the 30MPH repeater post at The Warren, facing towards Rockland St Mary and Norwich.  We have downloaded the statistics for the month and these are shown below.

Speed Monitor data graph

The overall number of vehicles passing the sign was around 1,000 higher than in May.  Regrettably the number staying within the legal speed limit was also the same as in May meaning around 1,000 more went through excessively fast.  More than 1 in every 7 vehicles was exceeding the speed limit, which is a worrying statistic.  Allowing a little leeway for those going through at 35MPH or below improves the picture as most of the 1,800 speeders fell into this category.

However 54 vehicles drove through at speeds above 40MPH, for which there is no excuse.  Even more worrying is the occasionally really high speed recorded.  For instance on Sunday morning 19 September at 49 minutes past midnight one driver clocked a speed of between 61-65MPH, and another recorded 51-55MPH at 2354 on Tuesday 7 September.  This is madness, and we shall be discussing with the authorities what can be done to combat this.  Travelling that fast past The Warren going towards Langley also means navigating the blind bend and humpback bridge leaving the village, which could have led to a serious incident.
