  • New Letter to Richard Bacon MP about rural broadband

At its meeting on 13 January the Parish Council agreed a proposal for a fresh letter to our Member of Parliament, Richard Bacon, to draw his attention to the village’s position on broadband, and its disappointment that the “alternative solution” for Claxton will end up being considerably more expensive than traditional solutions.  This puts rural locations such as Claxton at a major disadvantage compared to those urban and rural locations (including neighbouring Loddon and Chedgrave) which are enjoying the benefits of super-fast broadband through fibre-optic connections at much lower costs than for satellite broadband.  The Clerk wrote to Mr Bacon on 19 January and his letter appears below.  It has been acknowledged by Mr Bacon’s office. • Gritting Information for Volunteers

With really cold weather anticipated sometime in the next few weeks, Norfolk County Council has issued a useful guidance sheet aimed primarily at local volunteers who help keep paths (and roads) clear and safe for the community.  The guidance can be accessed by clicking here.

Claxton has just the one public (yellow) gritting box, which is situated on the corner of Church Lane opposite Burton’s Farm and Apple Acre.  The County Council is responsible for ensuring that the grit supply is replenished and if anyone notices that it needs topping up, please contact the Clerk on 484162.

  • The Recycling Revolution – what will be allowed from 1 October 2014

  • Claxton Flooding Contingency Guidance

Earlier this year your Parish Council agreed that Guidance to help villagers offset the effects of floods in Claxton should be drawn up.  Thanks go to South Norfolk Council, from whose own guidance much of the Claxton version has been drawn.  The guidance has now been agreed by the Council and copies have been printed for every household in the village.  They are in the process of being put through letter-boxes.  If any villager has not received one by the time of the next Council meeting on 20 November, they should contact the Clerk on 01508-484162 to arrange to receive one.

For those of you who are also happy to look at the guidance online please click here.

  • Your Handyperson Scheme

  • Claxton’s Village Sign – not long now …

As you can see from the photo (right), the large oak which will be carved to make the Village Sign was lowered into position on 6 February, under the watchful eyes of Parish Council Chairperson Pat Clare, and Claxton Pits Trust Chairman, Professor Roland Kaye.  The Pits Trust is funding the sign, designs for which were considered at the 2011 Fair on the Yare.  The full photo set (Creating the Village Sign) is on our flickr site at http://www.flickr.com/photos/78542021@N04/sets.

The wood sculptor, Ben Loughrill, will – weather permitting – begin the sculpting on site next Monday 11 February.  Ben is happy to work in front of an audience, but we ask that any onlookers should maintain a safe distance from what, until completion, will remain a work zone.
