  • Village Hall Annual Accounts 2017-18

At last night’s Village Hall AGM the Trustees approved the accounts for 2017-18, which are shown below.  A record of the AGM will appear on these pages in the coming days.

They also considered the responses received to the recent two-village questionnaire and will be publishing their response shortly.  Look out for this in a future post.VH Full Year 2017-18

  • News from the Village Hall

Sunday 16th September sees the return of the 50/50 Auction and we will be welcoming Edgar Hoddy who has agreed to be our auctioneer.  This should be a good day for both buyers and sellers and an opportunity to raise money for both you and the Village Hall, while getting rid of all those unwanted items you may have cluttering up your home, shed, garden or garage!  The Village Hall will be open from 10.00 – 4.00 on the day before the auction (Saturday 15th) for you to bring and register your items.  (Any unsold items must be taken away after the sale).  On Sunday 16th, viewing will take place from 10.00 am, and the auction itself will begin at 11.00 am.  For more information contact Robert Ellis on 01508 480914 or Julia Kaye on 01508 480527.

We are delighted to announce that Claxton & Carleton St Peter Community Café has been awarded the highest possible rating of 5 stars by the Government Food Standards Agency.  This can be viewed on the food.gov.uk/ratings South Norfolk website.  It is good to have our high standards officially recognised in addition to the many compliments regularly received from café regulars.  The café is held at the Village Hall on the second Tuesday of every month, from 10.00 – 12.00 with everyone welcome and also features the monthly draw for the 200 Club.

Our very popular Quiz Night took place on Saturday 17th June and was a great success, raising £473.80 for the Village Hall funds.  The Woodlarks were the worthy winners coming a whole 7 points ahead of their nearest rivals and a delicious two-course home cooked meal was enjoyed in the half time break.  Many thanks to quizmaster Mike Balmer who, as always, did an excellent job of challenging and amusing us with his questions!

  • Quiz Night 2018 report

10 teams turned out on Saturday evening to compete for the Claxton Quiz Challenge Cup (actually we don’t have a trophy – yet).  In a closely-fought contest marked by judicious use of Jokers and numerous sighs of exasperation at the fickleness of short-term memory, the Woodlarks eventually romped home with a commendable 79½ points out of a possible 107, 7 points ahead of their nearest rival.

Once again quizzers enjoyed good ales from the bar and a delicious two-course meal provided by the Community Café team.  This was Mike Balmer’s 6th annual quiz.  They all follow a fairly familiar format, and he admits that unearthing more interesting facts about Norfolk after exhausting the obvious ones over the years is becoming more difficult.  And yes, golf is a sport!  Mike would be happy to pass on the Quizmaster’s baton to anyone prepared to put something together for 2019 and form a team of his own to see if he has actually learned anything since 2013!

In the meantime thanks to everyone who came and quizzed in such good spirits.  We will hopefully see you next year.

  • News from the Village Hall

Thank you to everyone in Claxton & Carleton St Peter who has returned their Village Hall Questionnaire.  If you have not already done so, please return it as soon as possible as we are keen to look at the responses given by villagers to make sure the Village Hall is offering people what they want.  Details of how to do this are on the questionnaire, but the simplest ways are probably to give it to any committee member or bring it to the next Community Café.  If you would like someone to call to pick it up, please ring Rosie Gidlow on 01508 480173.

If you have ever attended an event at the Village Hall but have been put off by the poor acoustics, we have great news!  We have had acoustic panels fitted in early May.  We are sure they will greatly enhance the enjoyment of our events and will make coming to the Hall a much more comfortable experience for many of you who may have found the acoustics a problem in the past.  The acoustic panels are the first element of our ongoing improvement and refurbishment of the Hall and we are hoping for lots of support for our fundraising events to support these.

The next event is our ever popular Quiz Night which returns on Saturday 16th June. Please arrive from 7pm for a prompt start at 7.30pm.  Tickets are £10 and include a two course home-cooked meal (with a vegetarian option), with drinks available at the bar. Teams should be a maximum of 6 people, but if you are less than six or on your own and would like to link up with others to form a team of six, we will be happy to arrange this with you either before or on the night.  To book a place for this very popular event, ring Julia Kaye on 01508 480527.

Our new 200 Club is underway with the first draw having been made at May’s Community Café.  The way it works is that numbers between 1 and 200 are sold at £1.00 per number per month (so £12.00 if you join at the beginning of the year reducing by £1.00 per month for later joiners).  Every month one lucky number wins half the income (up to a maximum of £50).  The balance goes towards much needed funds for the Village Hall.  There are still plenty of numbers left to buy, so if you are interested or need more details contact Mike Balmer on 484162 or [email protected].

Sunday September 16th sees the return of the 50/50 Auction.  Details to follow, but do think about sorting out your unwanted items so they can be sold to raise money for both you and the Village Hall.

The Community Café opens to all every second Tuesday of every month from 10.00 – 12.00, where you can be assured of a warm welcome, delicious drinks, cakes and savouries and the opportunity to chat and find out about what is happening locally.  Do come to next month’s Café to find out what a difference the acoustic panels have made!

  • Village Hall Questionnaire – Your chance to HAVE A SAY

In the coming days the Trustees of the Village Hall will be putting a short questionnaire through every letterbox in Claxton and Carleton St Peter.  They are anxious to learn from you all what you would like your Village Hall to be providing for both villages.  The questionnaire should not take more than 5 minutes to complete.  A copy in PDF format is shown below – please note it is double-sided so just click on the arrow at the bottom left to go to page 2.  Anyone who would prefer to complete it on their computer and e-mail it back can use the attached Word document here.

Any questions to any of the 10 current Trustees, whose details are shown on page 2.  Many thanks and we look forward to hearing from as many of you as possible.Village Hall Questionnaire v3 8Apr-min

  • New Local Lottery in aid of Village Hall

Welcome to the Village Hall’s 200 Club, a local lottery which will deliver a monthly prize while also raising money for the Hall.

How does it work?  There will be 12 monthly draws starting with April 2018.  One number from those chosen by participants will be drawn out at the following month’s Community Café.  The winner will receive a cheque equivalent to half of the numbers sold for that particular month.  So if 40 numbers had been sold, this would give very good odds of 40:1 and mean a winner’s cheque for £20.  If 60 numbers had been sold the prize would be £30, up to a maximum of £50.

The lottery is open to anyone, whether they live in Claxton or Carleton St Peter or not.  There is no limit to the number of tickets which can be bought, but we ask that each ticket is bought for the year (or what remains of it).  £12 will get you a number for the whole of 2018-19 and you are free to chose any of the unallocated numbers between 1 and 200.

Numbers are now on sale through Mike Balmer, and he will be at the Community Café on 13 February to answer any questions and sell numbers.  The draw for April will be on Tuesday 8 May.

  • News from the Village Hall – January 2018

The Claxton and Carleton St Peter Village Hall Committee are looking forward to 2018 and opportunities for activities and events at the Hall.  All households in Claxton and Carleton St Peter will be receiving a questionnaire soon, where they will be asked what they would like to see happening at the Hall.  We are particularly interested to hear from individuals or groups who would like to use the hall for their activities, whether this is for children’s groups, clubs, sales, charities, education, entertainment or celebrations.  So look out for the questionnaire and return it to us so that we know what YOU want from YOUR Village Hall and hopefully can enable you to achieve it.

One very successful enterprise is, of course, the Community Café which in January celebrated its second birthday.  We were delighted to offer a free drink and a free raffle to all who came, to say thank you for supporting the Café over the past two years.  The Café continues to be very busy and attracts people from neighbouring villages as well as Claxton and Carleton St Peter.  Everyone is very welcome – so don’t forget to make a note in your diaries for 10am -12noon every second Tuesday of every month.  We look forward to seeing you!

  • 2018 Calendar

The 2018 Calendar featuring the most popular photos from this year’s competition goes on sale on Tuesday 14 November at the Community Café and can subsequently be obtained from Sarah Carter on 01508-480555.  The price is unchanged from last year, at £6.50.
