• Royal Mail Scam

The e-mail below arrived out of the blue this afternoon.  I don’t know what would have happened if I had clicked onto the link as requested but it could have resulted in an attempt to open up my home computer network to hackers.  I have deleted it.

  • Road Tax Scam

Below is the text of an e-mail received by your Site Manager purporting to be from the DVLA.  It isn’t.  One simple check to make when receiving such communications is to check the e-mail address it was sent from.  To be genuine this would have had “gov.uk” at the end of the address.  It would also not have been sent by e-mail.

The message reads badly too, with words missing (such as the word “fined” in the bottom line).  That’s not to say that all scammers are foreign without a high degree of literacy in the English language.  Just that this one is.

  • Oil tanks – keeping them safe and ready for winter

This article and its attachments was first published in 2016.  We have reproduced it every Autumn since, and with winter just round the corner we think it is worthwhile re-issuing it in 2020.

Our thanks to Rix Petroleum for pointing us towards the following videos which deal with (1) security of oil tanks and (2) preparing your tank for the winter.

    (1)  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TV5uRs9luts
    (2)  https://www.rix.co.uk/blog/2016/11/is-your-heating-oil-tank-winter-ready/

This is in light of FPS (Federation of Petroleum suppliers) and OFTEC’s (The Oil Firing Technical Association) “Tank Safe” campaign aimed at educating consumers on the best ways to maintain their tanks.

The video looks at some tips such as:

    1. Clear the area around your oil tank
    2. Check how secure your oil  tank is
    3. Don’t forget to service your oil boiler
    4. Top up early to lower your fuel costs.

Rix Petroleum Director, Duncan Lambert, details these and explains how to carry these out.

  • A service message from UK Power Networks

    Dear Sir/Madam,

Many are concerned about the ongoing Coronavirus public health issue and the way it has affected nearly every industry across the world.

We want to reassure you that, as the company responsible for distributing power to over 8.3 million properties across London, the South East and East of England, we know how important it is to keep electricity flowing to your home or business, especially during these uncertain times.

Our engineers are out as normal continuing their core role in maintaining your electricity network, and fixing any electrical faults that occur.

We have put into place a number of well-rehearsed contingency plans and precautions to ensure we maintain a good level of service, with high numbers of engineers and call centre staff available to support the ongoing situation.

With many of our customers now working from home and to support the wider UK economy through this very challenging period, from tomorrow evening (Friday 20th March), we will be cancelling most of our lower priority planned maintenance work. This is in order to avoid prolonged planned power cuts for people who are currently working from home.

If you or your constituents need information on a power cut, you can, as always, visit our Power Cut Map for live updates, tweet us at @UKPowerNetworks or telephone our customer service team, 24 hours a day, on 105 or 0800 3163 105. Calls are free from a landline or mobile phone.

Here are some of the practical steps we are taking:

    ·         To ensure continued resilience in months to come, we have split key teams across different locations, and hundreds of call agents are equipped to answer customer queries while working from home.

    ·         All essential work will continue as normal, including fixing power cuts on the rare occasions they happen.

    ·         We’re postponing lower priority work on electricity cables and substations, as we recognise many people are working from home and we want to minimise disruption to their lives.

    ·         We are working with other network operators and trade associations to ensure we share best practice and focus on activities that safeguards power supplies.

    ·         We have engaged with our supply chain to ensure access to the equipment and supplies we need to keep the electricity flowing.

What it means for you or your residents:

    ·         If our engineers might need to enter your home to restore your power, we’ll ask you on the phone first if you are self-isolating so we can make the relevant arrangements.

    ·         National guidance has been given to our engineers, who will wear protective equipment, stay in a different room from people who are infected or self-isolating, and avoid touching surfaces.

    ·         If you live in London, the East or South East of England, then being on our Priority Services Register will ensure you will receive extra support if you experience a power cut.

    ·         We understand that the coronavirus outbreak is a worrying time for many, and we want to make sure you have access to local services, should you need assistance during this unprecedented time.

    ·         We are here for you 24/7 and there are over 20 ways to get in touch including our website, on Twitter @ukpowernetworks, or ring 105.

We will continue to support those who need help the most during a power cut

    ·         We continue to offer free additional tailored support and guidance to customers on our Priority Services Register if they experience a power cut, reliant on electronic medical equipment or with young children.

    ·         For more information on our Priority Services Register, please visit www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/priority to register, or call us on 0800 169 9970.

    Thank you for your support

This is a fast-changing situation, and we will continue to adapt so that the way we work ensures you, our customers, continue to receive the highest level of service.

We will keep you updated and will review the information on our website continuously to ensure you have the most up to date information.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this very uncertain period.

    Yours faithfully,

    Michael

  • Message from UK Power Networks – Preparations for bad weather tonight

    Dear Councillor

You may have seen the forecast of unsettled weather, expected to arrive later on today and into this evening, affecting parts of the South East and the East of England.

We are currently monitoring the weather closely and we are in regular contact with the Met Office as the forecast develops.

Our electricity network is built to be resilient but extreme weather can damage overhead power lines resulting in some customers losing their electricity supply. Where this happens we work to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.  We have organised for additional staff in our contact centre to help customers whose electricity supply might be affected by the predicted weather, and we have called-up additional engineers to carry out repairs to our electricity network.

Both you and your local residents will be able to find regular updates on our website www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk and social media @UKPowerNetworks throughout this period.

Anyone experiencing a power cut can:

    ·         Call 105 to report power cuts and damage to the electricity network, or 0800 3163 105 (from a corded phone or mobile phone if you have no power)

    ·         Visit www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk for the latest updates

    ·         Visit www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/powercut and type in their postcode to view our live power cut map

    ·         Tweet @ukpowernetworks to report a power cuts or to receive updates

We urge the public to stay well clear from power lines and anyone spotting a damaged power line needs to report it to us immediately by calling 105 from a landline or mobile phone.

If they see electricity lines that are down or causing significant risk to the public they should call 999.

We provide extra help to customers on our Priority Service Register during a power cut. Households with older or disabled people, those with children under five, or where someone uses medical or mobility equipment that requires electricity as well as other reasons can join the register. You can find out more information about our Priority Service on our website: ukpowernetworks.co.uk/priority.

If you would like to share information about preparing for the extreme weather or the priority service register on social media you might like to use the following:

@UKPowerNetworks has extra staff on hand 24/7 to deal with the impact of the current extreme weather. Call 105 to report a power cut and visit https://www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/storm-centre-prepare

Do you, or someone you know, need extra support during a power cut? @UKPowerNetworks provides free services to vulnerable customers. Visit https://www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/power-cut/priority-services-register for more information.

I hope this information is helpful and please do share it with local residents and members of your community who would find it helpful.
